Part of the National Skills for Life scheme, Link into Learning is a Government initiative in Cornwall setup to offer friendly and flexible support with gaining essential skills of Adult Literacy and Numeracy. Having 30 centres across Cornwall, each centre offers the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications in Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy, as well as offering basic computer training for free to anyone over the age of 16.
Initially volunteering as a Support Tutor at the Link into Learning centre in Penryn. My work at the centre rapidly, though unofficially, evolved, filling the void of the single IT Technician which Link into Learning outsourced to.
While at Link into Learning I made use of the multiple computers setup to help develop a student / computer monitoring application in VB6.
The Link into Learning Centre Manager allowed the tutor to monitor each of the student's screens from a central location, as well as being able to take control if needed through a VNC Server. The Centre Manager also allowed the tutor to project their screen to each of the machines in the centre to aid in demonstrated teaching.
